Adding and Taking Away

"I warn everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this book: If anyone adds anything to them, God will add to him the plagues described in this book. And if anyone takes words away from this book of prophecy, God will take away from him his share in the tree of life and in the holy city, which are described in this book." Revelation 22:18-19

Yepp. It should be taken literally. To add to the book (i.e. Revelation), as is the case for adding to any other part of the Scripture, should be considered a blasphemy against the Spirit (for one mocks the Spirit by disregarding it), and is certainly heretical. The same is true for the incomplete transmission of the message (i.e. taking out of context). Yet, we should note the difference between exposition (i.e. an explanation of the message) and adding to it. The line is obviously thin, but suffice it to say that the Holy Scripture should be treated with utmost care.
