On Healing

Healing comes to those who believe. So too does salvation. Why is it that we can have salvation everywhere, but not healing?

Sometimes, it is easier to believe the unseen than the seen. This is because by its very nature, the "see-able" thing must be, well, seen. I believe in the salvation of Jesus Christ; I believe salvation can happen everywhere. Healing? I have to see it to believe it. If, from the outset, we do not believe that healing will take place (a considerably bigger leap of faith is needed), then even if we were to go through the motion of praying, the faith had in fact never been big enough for the healing to take place.

Can healing take place anywhere? Surely, it can. Jesus does not need healing services to heal others; He has also given to the disciples the power to heal (Mark 6:7-13). Surely, He has not withheld it from us, heirs to God's promise of salvation? Yet, it is faith that limits the extent to which miracles can happen, for it is said,

" 4Jesus said to them, "Only in his hometown, among his relatives and in his own house is a prophet without honor." 5He could not do any miracles there, except lay his hands on a few sick people and heal them. 6And he was amazed at their lack of faith."
- Mark 6:4-6

Why didn't healing come to the woman until she touched Jesus' cloak? Why was the centurion's servant healed by the mere word of Christ? It all boils down to faith.

Does it mean that everyone can heal? In the Scripture, it is said that the Spirit gives to different people different gifts (1 Corinthians 12). Therefore, it would appear that different people will be able to minister in different ways, of which healing is one. Nonetheless, we are urged to yearn for greater gifts, including the performing of miracles. Each person, then, has the potential (as opposed to ability) to heal, according to the abundance of the gifts that God gifts unto him.

Of course, this whole issue is very complex, and I have but touched on the surface of it. I shall meditate on this further, and report back in due time.

In Him,
Cyrus
